Afro-Pop: Ric Hassani

Ric Hassani is a Nigerian songwriter and singer who has his debut album called “The African Gentleman.” He gained is popularity from his single word titled songs ‘Gentleman’, ‘Police’, ‘Sing’ and ‘Believe’. His album offers an array of flavor and beats. From his heavy incorporation of West African polyrhythms to his western style of dress Hassani is a crowd pleaser, catering to a variety of music listeners.

The functional nature of Hassani’s “The African Gentleman” captures the ears and hearts of listeners with the purpose of appreciating and uplifting women. In this album, he uses this music to debunk the stereotypical expression of love by black men specifically African men.

In his song ‘Believe’, is where the first time drums form a major part of the music on his album. The drums and polyrhythms force listeners to dance especially with ‘Number One’ and ‘ Beautiful to Me’, songs that are so delightful. As a fan of the album, I find it hard to stay still or even resist a smile when I hear him sing ” you’re like the sunlight, oh my lady.” His music requires group participation whether it is with claps or call and response. As a black person, I can confidently say many of us have connections to the beats and rhythms and I believe this trait is pulled out when listening to this album.
